Hot Melt Adhesives (HMA)
100% solid, solvent-free thermoplastic adhesive systems — EVA, APAO, metallocene & polyolefin base systems
Product description
Hot melt adhesives (HMA) are 100% solid, solvent-free thermoplastic adhesive systems that are applied in the molten state and form a bond upon cooling — offering fast set speeds, clean application, and strong multi-substrate adhesion without the drying time or VOC concerns associated with solvent-based systems. WME supplies a comprehensive range of high-purity EVA-based (ethylene-vinyl acetate) and synthetic hot melt adhesive formulations, engineered for demanding industrial applications across packaging, bookbinding, bottle labeling, woodworking, and furniture and mattress assembly.
Each formulation is optimized around four critical performance parameters: set speed — which directly determines production line efficiency; thermal stability — which prevents viscosity drift, charring, and oxidation during prolonged hot-melt tank exposure; bond strength — which ensures durable, cohesive adhesion across a range of substrates including paper, board, film, wood, and nonwovens; and open time — which defines the working window between adhesive application and substrate assembly. WME's HMA portfolio is compatible with all major polymer base systems including EVA, APAO, metallocene, and polyolefin — and is supplied in pastilles, slabs, and pillow-pack formats for easy handling and dosing in industrial production environments.
Performance parameters
4 critical performance parameters
Every hot melt adhesive is a trade-off between these four variables. Getting the right balance for your specific application is the foundation of correct grade selection.
Set speed
Determines production line efficiency. Fast-set formulations support high-speed packaging and labeling lines without compromising bond integrity. The primary selection criterion for case sealing and high-speed carton lines.
Thermal stability
Prevents viscosity drift, charring, and oxidation during prolonged hot-melt tank exposure — critical for bookbinding and continuous production runs where the adhesive may remain in tank for extended periods.
Bond strength
Ensures durable, cohesive adhesion across a range of substrates including paper, board, film, wood, and nonwovens. Must remain intact under the mechanical and environmental stress of the intended end use.
Open time
Defines the working window between adhesive application and substrate assembly. Longer open time supports complex assembly operations; shorter open time enables faster production line speeds.
Application guide
Application performance guide
Match the right HMA formulation to your specific application by critical performance requirement.
| Application | Critical requirement | Key priority |
|---|---|---|
| Case & carton sealing | Fast set speed | High speed |
| Bookbinding & perfect binding | Thermal stability | Long exposure |
| Bottle & container labeling | Cold temperature performance | Low-temp bond |
| Woodworking & edge banding | Bond strength & cohesion | Multi-substrate |
| Mattress & furniture assembly | Open time & coverage | Spray application |
| Nonwoven hygiene bonding | Softness & flexibility | Low add-on |
Base systems
Polymer base systems
The polymer base system defines the fundamental performance envelope of the adhesive. WME supplies formulations across all four major base systems.
Most widely used. Excellent balance of cost, set speed, and bond strength. Standard for packaging and labeling applications globally.
Longer open time, flexible bonds, and better cold temperature performance. Preferred for woodworking and construction applications.
Narrow MW distribution — superior thermal stability, lower application temperature, better clarity. Premium alternative for demanding continuous runs.
High heat resistance and excellent chemical compatibility. For specialty industrial bonding applications outside standard packaging formats.
